Steel and other sectors: The potential to implement industrial energy efficiency projects across the full range of industrial sectors in Ukraine is vast. Energy intensity in Ukraine is reported to be around three times higher per output dollar than in the European Union. carbon+ works with local Ukrainian energy service companies (ESCOs) that have technical expertise relating to industrial efficiency projects in specific sectors. The Ukrainian steel sector presents particularly strong opportunities for energy efficiency projects, comprising 350 to 400 enterprises.

Typical areas for saving in industrial energy efficiency projects are: (i) measurement and control systems, (ii) process heat recovery, (iii) electric motors and transformers, (iv) space heating and lighting, (v) rehabilitation and renovation of heat generation and transmission facilities, (vi) cooling systems rehabilitation and upgrading, (vii) reconstruction of compressed air production and distribution systems; (viii) automatic systems of energy metering, and (ix) onsite energy generation facilities (i.e. energy outsourcing), particularly those that combine heat and power generation.

Cement plants: Cement plants are large emitters of carbon dioxide, with three main sources of emissions: (i) limestone calcinations through the production of clinker; (ii) fossil fuel combustion, usually as gas or coal, in the production of clinker; and (iii) electricity use, primarily in milling of clinker and gypsum to produce cement. Ukraine's 13 cement plants will require significant investments in modernization, as their production facilities are typically inefficient and out-dated.
