Coal mine methane projects capture methane gas that is vented through active coal mines and then used to generate electricity.
In the Donbas region in Eastern Ukraine, 164 coal mines produce 80 million metric tons of coal a year, which provide fuel for the country’s power generators and its industry.
Total methane emissions from Ukraine’s coal mining operations in 2003 were 2.0 billion cubic meters, of which only 7% were captured and used. The methane gas that is being vented could otherwise be captured and used to produce heat and electricity — thereby generating emission reductions of 30 million tCO2e.
