Landfill gas capture: Landfills emit methane gas from waste that they collect over many years. Landfill gas may be combusted through a flare or may be captured and utilized for electricity or heat production. With about 700 landfills in Ukraine, of which about 140 are considered suitable for extraction and utilization of landfill gas.
A landfill gas project may encompass the following activities: (i) remediation, where the landfill is prepared to support the collection and flaring of landfill gas; (ii) landfill gas collection system, including vertical gas extraction wells and collection units; (iii) gas flaring in an integrated booster and flare station; and (iv) electricity generation, where gas from the flaring station is directed to a gas-fired generator.
Biogas from animal waste and wastewater treatment: Animal waste management systems (AWMS) store animal effluent with anaerobic digesters that capture and combust resultant biogases. Likewise, similar anaerobic digesters capture organic material from wastewater. Captured gases may then be processed for electricity generation.
Ukraine is estimated to produce 2.3 billion cubic meters of biogas a year from animal waste and 330 million cubic meters a year from wastewater. Ukraine has an installed capacity of bio-digesters for 162,000 tons of biogas a year, which are largely idle due to the poor technical conditions of the equipment and lack of incentives to use them.
